Ukraine. No dangerous weather events for winter crops are forecast
In late November and early December the country was dominated by variable weather. The soil froze to a depth of 1-5 cm, with soil temperature at the 0-5 cm and 0-40 cm layers averaging 2ºC and 4.2ºC.
During the severest cold spell, soil temperature at the tillering node depth of winter wheat (3 cm) did not fall below -1-6ºC. The weather was fair for winter grains to survive the winter. Winter crops are in good condition, UkrAgroConsult reports.
Precipitation occurred in the form of rain, sleet, rain (0.4-22 mm). Almost all the country, except for its southern parts, got temporarily covered with 0.5-4.2 cm of snow, which then melted due to high temperatures and was gone as of the end of November. Precipitation did not improve the situation with soil moisture. A delay in plant growth and development is seen in a minor part of crops because of topsoil moisture shortages.
Weather forecast for December87-13:
- Precipitation (15-35 mm) in the form of snow, sleet, rain is expected in the western, northern, central, southern regions;
- No precipitation in the east;
- Air temperatures will be +4 … 6°C in the west, +1 … +3°C in northern and central parts of Ukraine, -1 … +1°C in the east, and +6 … +8°C in the south;
- No dangerous weather events for winter crops are forecast.
