Port of Vancouver sets grain export record as canola shipments rise

The Port of Vancouver exported a record 17.4 mln tons of bulk grains and oilseeds in the first half of 2026, up 14% from a year earlier. The increase was driven mainly by stronger shipments of canola, specialty crops and barley.

Canola exports through the port rose by nearly 19% to 4.85 mln tons. Shipments increased particularly strongly to China, Europe, Mexico and Pakistan.

Exports of specialty crops also expanded sharply. Lentil and pea shipments to China and Bangladesh doubled, while exports to India nearly tripled.

At the same time, bulk wheat exports declined by 4% to 8.1 mln tons. Port officials attributed the decrease to lower global prices and a shift by some Canadian farmers from wheat to canola.

Overall cargo volumes at the Port of Vancouver also reached a record 88.1 mln tons in the first half of the year, up 3% y/y. Vancouver remains Canada’s largest port and a key gateway for Canadian grain and oilseed exports to global markets.
