Weak demand for malting barley in the UK holds back the market despite strong crop prospects
Winter barley crop prospects in the UK remain positive, with fields developing well and showing a marked improvement compared to last season. Favorable weather conditions and broadly stable planting areas are supporting expectations for a solid 2026 harvest, although the final outcome will depend in part on spring barley performance.
Rising input costs driven by the conflict in the Middle East are unlikely to significantly affect winter crops, as most planting decisions were made earlier. However, higher prices for fuel and fertilizers have put pressure on spring barley growers, where margins are already tight and profitability remains uncertain.
Dry conditions in parts of the UK are also raising concerns about the establishment of spring barley crops. If these conditions persist and planting areas decline, total barley production in 2026 could be lower overall, even with stable winter barley acreage.
On the market side, feed barley prices have shown moderate support, averaging around £154.7/t in late April. Malting barley continues to trade at a small premium over feed, but demand remains subdued and trading activity is limited.
The key challenge comes from weak demand within the malting sector. Barley usage by brewers, maltsters, and distillers has dropped by nearly 20% year on year, reflecting reduced consumption of beer, whisky, and other spirits. Combined with global trade uncertainties and shifting consumption patterns, this has led many buyers to scale back procurement and delay contract offers, creating uncertainty for farmers planning the next season.
