Biological crop protection in Europe to grow by 7% annually

Europe’s biological crop protection market is evolving from a niche segment into an important part of modern farming. The market is expected to grow by around 7% annually over the next five years, while the overall European crop protection market is projected to expand by less than 2% per year.

Biological products are not expected to fully replace conventional chemical crop protection. Instead, they are increasingly being used in integrated pest management systems alongside chemical, agronomic, mechanical and digital solutions. Biologicals can support resistance management, reduce pesticide residues and promote biodiversity, while conventional products remain important where rapid and reliable performance is required.

At the same time, farmers are becoming more selective in their use of biological products as the market matures. Adoption increasingly depends on proven field performance, economic viability, regulatory requirements and demand across the food value chain. Solutions that combine agronomic effectiveness with attractive economics for farmers have the strongest growth prospects.

The greatest near-term growth potential for biological crop protection is concentrated in high-value crops, including fruits, vegetables, vineyards, greenhouse crops and potatoes. Grains and oilseeds could become a significant market in the longer term due to their large planted areas, but wider adoption will require technological advances and greater farmer confidence. Bioherbicides remain the weakest segment due to a lack of sufficiently effective and economically competitive solutions.

Major crop protection companies are already expanding their biological portfolios through acquisitions, licensing agreements and partnerships with technology developers while continuing to invest in conventional chemistry. Further market development is likely to involve a combination of different technologies, including hybrid solutions that integrate biological and synthetic active ingredients.
