Brent crude oil prices rose above $100 per barrel amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran and renewed attacks on shipping near the Strait of Hormuz. On the morning of September 10, Brent crude oil futures were trading above $100 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil was around $96 per barrel.

Brent crude oil has gained nearly 30% since early August. The market is reacting to the absence of a lasting agreement between the US and Iran to halt mutual attacks and growing risks of prolonged supply disruptions from the Persian Gulf.

Iran said it had attacked 10 vessels near the Strait of Hormuz after the US reported sinking five Iranian oil tankers. Crude oil flows through the strait remain significantly below pre-conflict levels.

Market participants expect disruptions to crude oil supplies from the Persian Gulf could persist. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key route for global crude oil trade, meaning restrictions on shipping are supporting elevated prices and putting additional pressure on alternative export routes.

Additional risks are emerging in the Red Sea, where intensified Houthi attacks threaten Saudi Arabian crude oil shipments. Further crude oil price movements will largely depend on shipping conditions and developments in the conflict between the US and Iran.
