Mandatory E20 fuel policy sparks renewed criticism in India
India is facing growing criticism over the government’s mandatory E20 gasoline policy, which requires fuel to contain 20% ethanol. Car owners are increasingly complaining about the lack of access to conventional gasoline and raising concerns about the impact of E20 on vehicle performance.
At the end of 2025, E20 became the primary gasoline sold at more than 90,000 filling stations across the country. Although the initial public backlash faded within weeks, the debate has resurfaced after a senior government lawyer described the policy as an “experiment” before later withdrawing the remark, renewing concerns about the fuel’s impact on vehicles.
According to local media reports, hundreds of motorists claim that E20 has reduced fuel efficiency and accelerated wear on certain engine components. One of the main complaints is that drivers no longer have the option to purchase conventional E10 gasoline.
Critics note that other countries introduced higher ethanol blends much more gradually. In the United States, E10 remains the standard gasoline, while higher ethanol blends are offered only as an option for compatible vehicles. In Brazil, ethanol blending was expanded over several decades.
Despite the criticism, the Indian government continues to support the E20 rollout as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil products and boost domestic bioethanol production. Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers have called on leading automakers to provide clear guidance on vehicle compatibility with E20 fuel and its potential impact on long-term performance.
