China’s grain harvest has surpassed the 650 million tons mark for the ninth consecutive year.

In order to ensure the country’s food security, China will launch a new round of actions aimed at significantly increasing grain production in the coming years.

According to the action plan released by the Chinese State Council, the country aims to increase grain production capacity by more than 50 million tons by 2030. By that time, the area under crops will be about 1.75 billion mu (117 million hectares), and grain yield per mu will reach 420 kg.

China’s grain harvest has exceeded 650 million tons for the ninth consecutive year. The per capita grain share is 493 kilograms.

However, the gap between grain supply and demand may widen in the future, making it necessary to further increase production capacity to ensure food security, said the State Committee for Development and Reform of the People’s Republic of China.

Corn and soybeans will be the main contributors to the increase in grain production. As for rice and wheat, the focus will be on improving quality and optimizing structure. Potatoes and other cereals and pulses will be grown according to local conditions, the document said.

The State Development and Reform Committee of the PRC and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the PRC plan to assist the administrations of 720 counties in implementing a range of projects to improve grain production capacity.
