2023 U.S. Planting – Corn 14% Planted, Soybeans 9% Planted
The weather across the Midwest has been extremely variable the last few weeks. Two weeks ago, there were record high temperatures and summer-like warmth. Last week was cooler than normal with rainfall across the central areas and snowfall across the northern areas. The forecast for this week is calling for continued below normal temperatures with mostly dry weather across the Midwest.
The cool temperatures are going to slow the soil-drying process and the planting. Emergence of the corn and soybeans that have already been planted will also be slowed by the cool temperatures. There is also the possibility of seed chilling for the corn already planted.
Planting in the south-central and southern locations could still proceed normally. Planting in the northern and northwestern areas is going to be a challenge, at least in the near term. The weather in the northwestern Corn Belt would need to improve significantly in early May or they may be facing planting delays.
The 2023 U.S. corn is 14% planted compared to 7% last year and 11% average. This represents an advance of 6% for the week. The corn is 3% emerged compared to 2% last year and 2% average. The most rapid planting progress continues to be in the southern locations with little to no corn planted in the northern and northwestern areas.
The corn in Missouri is 58% planted (18% average), Tennessee is 49% (29% average), Kentucky is 36 (23% average), Kansas is 24% (19% average), Illinois is 18% (11% average), Iowa is 10% (10% average), Nebraska is 10% (7% average), Indiana is 9% ( 6% average), and Ohio is 6% (2% average).
The 2023 U.S. soybeans are 9% planted compared to 3% last year and 4% average. This represents an advance of 5% for the week. The most rapid soybean progress is also in the southern areas with very little planted in the northern areas.
The soybeans in Louisiana is 41% planted (25% average), Mississippi is 34% (25% average), Arkansas is 34% (15% average), Kentucky is 19% (6% average), Missouri is 16% (1% average), Tennessee is 16% (3% average), Illinois is 15% (6% average), Indiana is 8% (3% average), Ohio is 6% (2% average), Kansas is 4% (1% average), and Nebraska is 4% (2% average).
