Vietnam pig, poultry numbers expand while cattle decline
Vietnam’s pig population rebounded in the first half of 2025, supported by strong prices and a shift toward semi-industrial production, according to a recent USDA FAS market report.
The herd at the end of June was estimated to be 3.8% higher than a year earlier, with sharp gains in Gia Lai (up 30%), Kon Tum (up 20%) and Tay Ninh (up 48%).
African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, lumpy skin disease and PRRS remain challenges. The prime minister signed a directive in July calling for urgent measures to control ASF, which officials said continues to threaten livestock sector growth targets.
Vietnam’s poultry flock grew 4% year over year in June, with no major disease issues reported.
By contrast, buffalo and cattle numbers continued to fall. The buffalo population was down 3.4% and the cattle herd slipped 0.6% compared to June 2024, due to weak profits and reduced grazing areas.
Feed demand is forecast to reach 28.7 million metric tons in 2025 and 29.5 million in 2026. Corn imports are expected to rise to 12.2 million tons as local production declines.
