Ukraine. Due to temperatures were sliding gradually, plants passed the second hardening stage successfully
Most of the January 11-20 period witnessed cold weather with snowfalls. Owing to available snow cover, the lowest soil temperature at the tillering-node depth (3 cm) was above critical. Winter grain plants are dormant now.
Average daily temperatures were sliding gradually, therefore plants passed the second hardening stage successfully. Low temperatures persisted for seven days.
Sufficient snow cover with good heat-insulative properties prevented low temperatures from rapidly getting into the soil. Such conditions mitigate the risk of killing or damaging winter grains by frost, UkrAgroConsult reports.
Winter grains that did not reach full tillering in the fall (i.e. those in the emergence or 1-3-leaf stages) are still exposed to significant risk.
Weather forecast for January 25-31:
– Precipitation in the form of rain and sleet is expected all over the country;
– The western and northern regions will receive 5-15 mm, while the central, southern, and eastern ones will get 15-35 mm;
