U.S. Corn Down 1% to 54% Gd/Ex, Soy Unchanged at 57% Gd/Ex

Corn – The condition of the 2022 U.S. corn crop declined 1% last week to 54% rated good/excellent. Seven states indicated that the corn condition improved last week, 9 states indicated that the condition had declined, and 2 states were unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the eastern and southern locations while most of the declines were found in the central and western locations. The top five rated corn states are: Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota, Minnesota, and a tie between Iowa and Michigan. The five lowest rated corn states are: Texas, Kansas, Tennessee, Colorado, and North Carolina.

Weekend rains across the central Corn Belt may help some of the later planted corn, but they probably came too late to add yield to the earlier planted corn. Where the rain fell, it should help the corn from deteriorating further. The far western Corn Belt continues to be dryer than normal with limited rainfall in the forecast.

Soybeans – The condition of the 2022 U.S. soybean crop was unchanged at 57% rated good/excellent. Ten states indicated that the soybean condition improved last week, 6 states indicated that the condition had declined, and 2 states were unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the eastern and southern locations while most of the declines were found western locations The top five rated soybean states are: Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, and a tie between Iowa and North Dakota. The five lowest rated soybean states are: Kansas, Nebraska, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri.

The soybeans benefited from rainfall last week and over the weekend and any additional rainfall early this week will go a long way to help the soybeans finish on a strong note. The problem area for soybeans remains the far western Corn Belt.

Soil Moisture – The nation’s topsoil moisture declined last week with 6 states indicating improved soil moisture and 12 states indicating lower soil moisture. Most of the improvements were found in the northern and southern locations while most of the declines were found in the central and western locations. The five states with the highest soil moisture are: Louisiana, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Ohio, and Minnesota. The five states with the lowest soil moisture are: Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, Missouri, and Iowa.

The far western Corn Belt is the driest and unfortunately, there is very little rain in the forecast for the region. The topsoil in Nebraska is rated 81% short/very short, Kansas is 80% short/very short, and South Dakota is 61% short/very short.
