Shell will not resume construction of biofuels plant in Rotterdam
Shell Nederland Raffinaderij has decided not to resume construction of its planned biofuels plant at Shell Energy and Chemicals Park in Rotterdam, which was set to start in 2022.
After an in-depth commercial and technical assessment of the project, the company has decided not to proceed with the project, said Machteld de Haan, Shell’s president of downstream, renewables and energy solutions, noting that after assessing the market dynamics and the cost of completion, it became clear that the project would not be competitive enough.
Shell invested $8 billion (€6.9 billion) in renewable energy and low-carbon fuels between 2023 and 2024. In 2024, it traded more than 10 billion litres of biofuels, selling 10 times more than it produced. Last year, the company became one of the world’s leading suppliers of SAF.
The Netherlands remains a key region for Shell, where the company’s business spans its entire energy system, from oil and gas production to retail outlets. In recent years, the company has invested €6.5 billion (€5.6 billion) in a wide range of energy transition projects in the country.
Further development of the grain and oilseed markets of Ukraine and the Black Sea region will be in the spotlight of the BLACK SEA GRAIN. KYIV conference, taking place on April 22–23 in Kyiv. The event will focus on strategic directions for the agricultural sector through 2030, including investments, energy independence, processing, and exports of high-value products.
