The International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasts that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production in 2026 will account for just 0.8% of global jet fuel consumption. Despite an expected increase of more than 26% compared to the previous year, SAF will remain a very small share of the aviation fuel mix.

According to IATA estimates, global SAF production is expected to reach around 2.4 million tonnes in 2026. At the same time, airlines are projected to spend approximately $4.3 billion on SAF purchases, highlighting its significantly higher cost compared to conventional jet fuel.

IATA noted that the current growth rate remains insufficient to meet the aviation industry’s climate goals. The association said that SAF market development is still lagging behind what is required and needs to accelerate significantly.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh said the path to meeting 65% of aviation fuel demand with SAF by 2050 is becoming increasingly difficult due to inconsistent government policies and a lack of interest from oil companies. He added that the current energy challenges should be driving faster adoption of renewable fuels.

Meanwhile, a passenger survey conducted by IATA in April showed strong support for aviation decarbonisation. 89% of respondents believe the aviation sector should continue reducing emissions even if government efforts are reduced.

In addition, 66% of passengers said they are willing to pay more for tickets to offset emissions, while nearly 88% expect airfares to rise due to sustainability investments. IATA emphasises the need for global coordination to scale up SAF, including expanding renewable energy supply, improving access to fuel infrastructure, and developing a unified global SAF market.
