Romania sows record rapeseed acreage and hopes for biggest grain harvest overall
Rapeseed was sown in the fall on a record area of over 700,000 hectares. According to the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture and analysts, wheat has excellent prospects this year.
According to official data requested by the Romanian agro portal Agrointeligenta from the Ministry of Agriculture on the sown area as of May 28, 2025, the structure is as follows:
– rapeseed currently occupies 702,000 ha
– wheat + rye + triticale: 2,299,000 ha
– barley: 447,000 ha
The Romanian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported at the beginning of May that, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the following production of the main agricultural crops was achieved in 2024:
Cereals: 17.87 million tons, of which:
– Wheat: 9.29 million tons
– Corn: 5.99 million tons
– Barley and two-row barley: 2.19 million tons
– Oats: 145,000 tonnes
– Legumes: 126,000 tonnes
Oilseeds: 2.95 million tonnes, of which:
– Sunflower: 1.49 million tonnes
– Soybeans: 295,000 tonnes
– Rapeseed: 1.16 million tonnes
Vegetables
– Potatoes: 968,000 tonnes
– Vegetables: 2.06 million tonnes
The outlook for wheat production this year is quite optimistic, given the abundant rains this spring. Expert Cezar Gheorghe recently estimated wheat production at 13.3 million tonnes (compared to 9.3 million tonnes last year, an expected increase of 40%), which is likely to surpass Romania’s exceptionally good 2021 harvest.
