Vietnam to launch its first nationwide used cooking oil collection system for SAF production

Malaysia-based FatHopes Energy (FHE) and PetroVietnam Oil Corporation (PVOIL) have agreed to establish Vietnam’s first nationwide used cooking oil (UCO) collection system. The collected feedstock will be used for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other advanced biofuels.

The project will combine FatHopes Energy’s UCO collection and digital traceability technologies with PVOIL’s infrastructure. The Vietnamese company operates a network of around 1,000 filling stations, supported by its own logistics, transportation and warehousing infrastructure, which could provide the backbone for rolling out the system nationwide.

Used cooking oil will be collected from households, restaurants, industrial kitchens, seafood processing plants and other sources. It will then be converted into certified renewable feedstock for SAF production. FHE’s Waste Recycling Management System (WRMS) will provide digital traceability throughout the collection process.

The first phase of the project will be launched in Ho Chi Minh City, after which the collection system will be gradually expanded across Vietnam. PVOIL and its subsidiary PVOIL Trans will lead the implementation and expansion of the network, involving businesses, local communities and other feedstock suppliers.

The new system is expected to supply FatHopes Energy with more than 200 thsd tons of feedstock per year, including volumes for export and the company’s planned refinery in Port Klang, Malaysia. The project is also expected to strengthen cooperation between Malaysia and Vietnam in developing the SAF industry in Southeast Asia.
