Rising Brazilian beef prices create new export opportunities for Paraguay
Rising Brazilian beef prices are creating opportunities for Paraguay to strengthen its position in international markets, particularly in Chile, where the two countries compete for buyers. However, a declining cattle herd and a stronger national currency are limiting the competitiveness of Paraguayan exporters. This was stated by Martin Cosp, a representative of the Meat Commission of the Paraguayan Rural Association (ARP), during the SIAL Paris 2026 international food exhibition held in France on October 17–21.
According to Cosp, demand for Paraguayan beef remains strong in international markets, but rising global prices are making it more difficult to conclude new contracts. Higher beef prices are prompting some consumers to switch to more affordable types of meat, particularly poultry and pork. This creates additional risks for beef exporters despite continued interest from international buyers.
Chile remains one of the most promising markets for Paraguay. According to the ARP representative, some Chilean importers are willing to pay a premium of $200–300/t for Paraguayan beef over Brazilian products due to its quality characteristics. However, when the price gap becomes too wide, buyers switch to cheaper Brazilian beef. Therefore, the current increase in Brazilian beef prices could help Paraguay regain some lost customers. In the industrial processing beef segment, products from both countries are currently traded on roughly similar terms.
Meanwhile, Paraguay’s ability to increase beef exports is constrained by domestic production factors. A declining cattle herd and the retention of female animals for herd rebuilding are reducing the number of cattle available for slaughter and, consequently, the volume of beef available for export. The strengthening of the national currency is also putting pressure on exporters’ competitiveness by potentially weakening their pricing position in international markets.
Despite these challenges, Paraguayan beef continues to enjoy a positive reputation among international buyers. According to Cosp, further export growth will require more active promotion in overseas markets, participation in international food exhibitions and
