In August 2026, the average market price of pork in Latvia increased by 26.8% compared with July, reaching €180.97 per 100 kg. However, prices remained 11.1% lower than in August 2025. This is according to data from Latvia’s Ministry of Agriculture, as reported by LETA.

Price growth in Latvia was significantly stronger than the EU average. In August, pork prices across the European Union increased by 5.5% compared with the previous month, while declining by 20.7% year-on-year. The average market price of pig carcasses in the EU stood at €159.82 per 100 kg. As a result, pork prices in Latvia were 13.2% above the EU average.

Price trends also varied considerably across other EU countries. In August, compared with July, pork prices increased by 19.5% in Lithuania, 17.4% in Poland and 8.1% in Germany, while falling by 9.1% in Denmark and remaining unchanged in Estonia. Amid sharp price fluctuations, Latvia is experiencing a decline in domestic pork production. In the first half of 2026, the number of pigs slaughtered in the country decreased by 12.8% compared with the same period last year, while meat production fell by 11.2%. By contrast, across the European Union, the number of animals slaughtered increased by 1.6%, and pork production rose by 1.8%.

EU pork trade also showed mixed trends. During the first five months of 2026, EU pork imports increased by 8.1% year-on-year. In particular, supplies from the United Kingdom rose by 2%, while imports from Chile declined by 29.9% and those from Switzerland fell by 3.7%. Meanwhile, total EU pork exports decreased by 1.4% over the same period, despite increased shipments to South Korea, Vietnam and the United States.
