Lupin recognized as a superfood in Switzerland
Swiss environmental foundation Biovision has named sweet lupin the first recipient of its new “Superfood of the Year” status. The award was introduced in 2026 to draw attention to crops that can support both healthy diets and sustainable agriculture.
Biovision highlighted lupin’s high nutritional value. The crop is rich in plant protein, dietary fibre and essential micronutrients, while also containing all essential amino acids. This makes lupin a promising alternative to conventional protein sources.
The crop also offers important agronomic benefits. Lupin can fix atmospheric nitrogen, helping improve soil fertility and reduce the need for mineral fertilisers. In addition, it supports biodiversity and is considered a valuable honey plant.
According to Biovision, lupin could play an important role in future food systems by combining benefits for human nutrition with environmental advantages. Its recognition as a superfood also reflects the global trend toward functional foods and alternative plant-based protein sources.
