Morocco to subsidize wheat imports
Morocco is resuming soft wheat imports after a several-month pause and will introduce a subsidy for importers. From September 16 to 30, the subsidy will be set at 20.80 dirhams per quintal, or about $22.2/t, according to the country’s grain agency ONICL.
Wheat imports were suspended in June to prioritize the improved domestic crop. ONICL now plans to gradually restore support for foreign purchases, with rolling subsidies to be applied from September 16 through the end of December.
The mechanism is intended to help importers offset the gap between international wheat prices and an acceptable domestic price level. The subsidy may be revised depending on global market conditions and import costs.
Morocco’s return to the global market comes amid disruptions to wheat supplies from the Black Sea region. Market participants are watching which suppliers will cover the country’s import needs in the coming months as exports from Ukraine and Russia remain constrained.
