IMO approves new bulk grain loading method for vessels
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted amendments under Resolution MSC.552(108) to the International Code for the Safe Carriage of Grain in Bulk, according to the Register of Shipping of Ukraine.
The amendments introduce a new grain loading method that was not previously covered by the Code. It refers to a specially adapted cargo hold partially filled around the hatch opening, without trimming the grain in the end sections of the hold.
This loading configuration requires updated calculations of heeling moments caused by grain shift, as well as new volumetric curves for each cargo hold, ranging from the lower edge of the hatch beam to the upper edge of the hatch coaming.
The amendments entered into force on 1 January 2026 and apply to new ships whose keels are laid on or after this date. For existing vessels using this loading method, an additional appendix to the ship’s grain stability information may be prepared and submitted to the Register for approval.
Ship loading software must also be updated and approved to incorporate the new stability curves and revised grain loading configurations.
