Morocco plans to produce 100 thsd tons of synthetic fuel annually
Swiss company Synhelion plans to build a large-scale commercial renewable synthetic fuel plant in Morocco with an annual production capacity of 100 thsd tons. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Moroccan government for the project.
The facility is planned for the Tan-Tan province in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region in southern Morocco. Synhelion has already secured a land reservation for the future plant and established Synhelion Morocco to support the project’s further development.
One of the region’s main advantages is its significant renewable energy potential and favorable conditions for developing a synthetic fuel value chain. The Moroccan government expects the project to support new industrial activities, attract investment and create economic opportunities in the region.
Synhelion said the signing of the memorandum, the land reservation and the establishment of its local branch mark the project’s transition from evaluation to implementation. The facility is expected to become the company’s first commercial-scale plant of this size in the region.
The project is part of Synhelion’s plans to scale up its renewable synthetic fuel technology. However, the company has not yet disclosed the timeline for construction and commissioning of the plant or the amount of investment required.
