France plans to declare a state of emergency for farmers due to heat
French Agriculture Minister Anne Genevre will present a bill to the Senate today to introduce a state of emergency in the agricultural sector. The reason is the significant losses that French farmers are suffering due to abnormally hot weather.
According to French media, Anne Genevre is insisting on the urgent implementation of state support measures for agricultural producers who have suffered from extreme weather conditions.
The French Ministry of Agriculture notes that the current heat wave is exceptional due to its early onset and high intensity. It has a particularly serious impact on the country’s agricultural sector.
The Confederation of French Farmers has appealed to the authorities to provide emergency assistance. The poultry industry is suffering the greatest losses. In the west of the country, where a significant part of poultry production is concentrated, farmers report increased livestock mortality.
French meat processing plants have been forced to reduce production to a minimum. Milk yields have also fallen sharply, and fruit and vegetable producers have suffered significant losses. The situation is particularly difficult on non-irrigated land, where some farms have lost up to half of their potential harvest.
Industry associations say that the barley harvest in France is almost complete, while the wheat harvest is just beginning. At the same time, yields remain below average due to excessive winter precipitation and hot weather that began in the spring.
