In April this year, Ukraine exported 13.13 million tons of goods worth $3.355 billion. Corn became the leader in terms of volume and foreign exchange earnings.

These data were provided by Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Representative of Ukraine, on Facebook.

He noted that in terms of volume, exports were the largest since the large-scale invasion (in February 2022 – 12.8 million tons). In terms of money, Ukrainian exports are still less than before the war, but since the beginning of the year they have been steadily holding at more than $3 billion.

“This figure is based on a significant increase in corn exports – 4.1 million tons, almost twice as much as in March. We also shipped large volumes of ore (3.4 million tons) and wheat (1.9 million tons),” said Taras Kachka.

The top ten commodities in terms of revenue are traditional ones: corn – $645 million, oil – $490 million, wheat – $319 million, ore – $265 million, meal – $109 million, poultry meat – $79 million, sugar – $57 million, and rapeseed – $53 million. According to him, the list also includes metallurgical products – semi-finished products ($67 million) and rolled products ($64 million).

“The most interesting thing, of course, is what comes after the top 10 products, because here we have more value-added goods: soybeans – $53 million, pipes – $46 million, furniture – $38 million, insulated wires – $34 million, timber – $34 million, barley – $33 million, soybean meal – $23 million, soybean oil – $22 million, cast iron – $21 million, biscuits – $20 million, medicines – $20 million, plywood – $19 million, honey – $17 million, juices – $17 million, candy – $15 million, chocolate – $15 million, joinery – $14 million, wheel sets – $13 million, electricity – $13 million, hot-rolled bars – $11 million,” added Taras Kachka.

Sea freight increased by 14.5% to 9.6 million tons. Rail transportation was stable at 2.6 million tons. Exports by road increased slightly to 806 thousand tons (+3.8%).

Geographically, the EU dominates exports, with $1.8 billion worth of goods shipped there. Most exports went to such EU countries as Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Germany, the trade representative said.

Outside the EU, most exports went to China – 368 million, Turkey – 264 million, Egypt – 153 million, and India – 80 million.

“Imports in April amounted to $5.55 billion. The top 5 import items are petroleum products, cars, medicines, plant protection products and UAVs. These are all the things we need for the economy to function and for the frontline,” summarized Taras Kachka.
