Canada’s canola crush reached a record 1.17 mln tons in June
Canada continues to expand its domestic canola processing capacity amid strong demand for canola oil from the renewable fuels industry. According to Oil World, Canadian crushers processed a record 1.17 mln tons of canola in June, up 13% from May and 37% higher than in June 2025.
The increase was driven by firm vegetable oil prices across North America and robust demand for canola oil from biodiesel producers in both Canada and the United States. Higher transportation costs for moving canola seed to export terminals have also made domestic processing more economically attractive.
During the April–June period, Canadian processors crushed a record 3.26 mln tons of canola, exceeding both the previous quarter’s 3.1 mln tons and the 2.61 mln tons processed in the same period a year earlier. The growth was primarily supported by strong demand from the U.S. renewable diesel sector and stable domestic consumption.
Oil World forecasts that domestic crushing will account for 65% of Canada’s total canola utilization in the 2026/27 marketing year, setting another all-time high. This compares with 59% a year earlier and just 45% in the 2016/17 season.
Total canola crush in Canada is expected to reach at least 12.5 mln tons in the 2025/26 season, another record level. The trend highlights Canada’s growing focus on processing more of its canola crop domestically and exporting higher-value products such as canola oil instead of raw seed.
