Brazil pork prices drop in January – Cepea
Price averages for Brazil live pig and pork meat dropped in January against December/23 in Brazil, according to a recent market report from Cepea.
The decrease is attributed to the low pace of in natura pork exports and to the weak demand in the domestic market.
In the first 19 working days of January, the daily average of shipments was 3.7 thousand tons, 22.7% less than in December/23 – data from Secex. China, Brazil’s most important trade partner, usually boost purchases in the end of the year, to build stocks for the Chinese New Year. Therefore, acquisitions typically decrease in January.
Sales in the domestic market were moving at a slow pace in late January due to the low purchase power of consumers in this period of end of the month, to school vacation and to the high supply of live pig, scenario that pressed down quotations in the month.
