2021/22 Argentina Corn 23.2% Planted vs. 29.4% Average

The weather in Argentina is becoming somewhat worrisome. The soil moisture is below normal in many locations and there was only limited rainfall over the weekend and the forecast for this week is calling for only light and scattered showers. The forecast for the 6-10 day period is also expected to be dryer-than-normal.

It looks like the weather pattern in Argentina is conforming to what is expected when a La Nina is in place – dryer-than-normal across central and northern Argentina. It is still early of course with less than 1% of the soybeans planted and 23% of the corn planted, but the weather in Argentina is becoming more of a concern.

The 2021/22 corn crop in Argentina was 23.2% planted as of late last week compared to 23.3% last year and 29.4% average according to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange. This represents and advance of 2.1% for the week. The corn planting pace is now slower than average and continued dry weather is a growing concern.

In the core production areas, the corn is 75% to 80% planted with 5% to 25% planted in southern Argentina and 0% to 5% planted in far northern Argentina. What is being planted is the first phase of corn planting, which in some areas, is nearly complete. The most advanced corn is in the 6-leaf stage and there are some minor moisture stresses starting to appear.
