Wheat supports moderate growth in Malaysia’s feed milling industry
Wheat use in Malaysia’s animal feed sector is projected to continue to grow slightly in the MY 2026/27, as feed mills adjust their formulations in response to fluctuations in global grain prices. Total wheat consumption is expected to reach 1.93 million tonnes, with feed and other residual uses increasing to 52,000 tonnes. This growth is driven by the gradual optimization of the ingredient structure where wheat demonstrates a price advantage over corn.
Corn remains a staple feed crop, but processors are increasingly adopting a flexible approach to grain substitution based on price spreads and supply conditions. This supports the limited but steady inclusion of wheat in certain feed formulations.
Malaysia remains entirely dependent on wheat imports, and demand dynamics remain closely linked to the development of livestock production, particularly poultry, which accounts for the bulk of feed consumption. The gradual increase in the share of wheat reflects current cost management strategies in the feed industry and does not indicate a structural transformation of the feed base.
