Wheat, rapeseed and corn in Europe mature 20 days earlier than at the start of the century

Winter wheat, rapeseed and corn in Europe are maturing and being harvested significantly earlier in 2026 than at the beginning of the century. According to European Commission data, winter wheat reached maturity around 20 days earlier in some parts of the EU than in 2000. Similar shifts have been observed for rapeseed and corn.

The changes are already having a noticeable impact on the farming calendar. In Bavaria, for example, active corn harvesting more than 20 years ago typically took place around mid-September, while it has now shifted closer to the beginning of the month. Wheat, which was previously mainly harvested between August 10 and 15, can now be harvested as early as late July in some years.

One of the main reasons is rising temperatures. Crops accumulate the heat units needed to progress through their development stages more quickly, shortening the period from the start of vegetation to maturity. In 2026, this process was further accelerated by several heatwaves that affected Europe from late May onward.

At the same time, earlier maturity does not mean higher yields. High temperatures and moisture shortages negatively affect crop development, particularly later crops whose critical growth stages coincide with spring and summer droughts. In France, only 27% of the grain corn crop was rated in good or excellent condition as of August 31, the lowest level since records began in 2011.

France’s agriculture ministry forecasts grain corn production to decline by 35% from 2025 this year. Analysts expect an even steeper drop of around 50%, which would bring output to its lowest level since 1976. The shift toward earlier crop maturity is therefore increasingly accompanied by yield risks caused by heat and insufficient moisture.
