Global wheat prices fell to their lowest level since July 2026 following reports that Russia is considering proposals to ensure the safety of grain shipments in the Black Sea. According to Bloomberg, the market has effectively lost the risk premium that had built up amid escalating tensions in the region.

On Monday, October 26, the most actively traded wheat futures contract in Chicago fell by 2% to $6.125 per bushel, its lowest level since July 9. By comparison, futures had reached $7.95 per bushel in early September, their highest level since early 2023.

According to Interfax, Russia is considering proposals to ensure the safe transportation of grain through the Black Sea. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov said that Moscow was discussing the issue with Turkey and several other countries.

Dmitry Rylko, general director of agricultural consultancy IKAR, noted that global wheat prices have remained highly sensitive to developments in Black Sea shipping since the beginning of the season. Any positive signals suggesting a potential improvement in shipping conditions have pushed futures prices lower.

Meanwhile, attacks on ports and merchant vessels in the Black Sea continue, while grain shipments from Ukraine and Russia have declined significantly. Even if security conditions improve, a rapid return to traditional trade routes remains unlikely, as many importing countries have already shifted to alternative suppliers and more expensive logistics routes.
