Weight-loss drugs are reshaping pasta demand in the US
US pasta manufacturing is facing a new structural challenge driven by GLP-1 weight-loss medications. This was highlighted by Nora Stabert, Vice President at Winland Foods and Chair of the National Pasta Association (National Pasta Association), during the association’s annual meeting in Savannah, Georgia.
According to her, GLP-1 drugs are already changing eating habits across the United States. Around 10 million people currently use them, with projections reaching up to 30 million by 2030. This is leading to lower overall calorie consumption and reducing demand for traditional carbohydrate-rich foods, including pasta.
However, the impact is not entirely negative. While some consumers are cutting back on volume, many are shifting toward smaller portions and more premium products. This is creating new opportunities for manufacturers, including single-serve formats and higher-value, nutrient-enhanced pasta products tailored to changing dietary patterns.
Despite these shifts, the industry remains stable, but companies are increasingly adjusting their strategies to serve a new consumer base shaped by the growing influence of weight-loss medications.
