Unfavorable conditions for sowing winter crops have developed in various regions of Ukraine
Adverse agro-meteorological conditions have created serious challenges for the sowing of winter crops across different regions of Ukraine. According to the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences (NAAS), the last week of summer was marked by sharp temperature fluctuations and a lack of effective rainfall, which led to a deficit of productive soil moisture. In the southern regions, heat and drought caused premature drying of sunflower and corn plants in some fields, making soil preparation for winter sowing extremely difficult.
In central and eastern regions, the situation also remains tense: in Kyiv region, soil moisture reserves were insufficient for sowing winter rapeseed within the optimal time frame, while in Kharkiv region, prolonged soil drought spread across large areas. Despite local rainfall, soil moisture in the 0–100 cm layer remained critically low, putting at risk the start of winter sowing for the 2026 harvest.
