Ukrainian lentils gain a market edge through earlier export availability
Ukrainian lentils have a competitive advantage on the global market because they can reach export markets earlier than supplies from major competing origins. According to market participants, Ukraine can start shipments about one month earlier than Russia and Kazakhstan and around three months earlier than Canada and Australia.
This allows Ukrainian producers to meet import demand at the beginning of the season, particularly in Türkiye. According to Agro Nomia LTD Director Onur Vatan, Ukraine is also able to produce high-quality lentils, further strengthening its position in export markets.
Lentil acreage is also gradually expanding. In southern Ukraine, planted area has increased roughly threefold in recent years. In spring 2027, part of the land that farmers are unable to sow with winter crops could also be shifted to pulses.
At the same time, the global lentil market is characterized by ample supply. AgPulse Analytica estimates global production at around 9.5 mln tons, while Canada and Australia hold substantial carryover stocks. Kazakhstan is also strengthening its position, with production of about 655 thsd tons and export potential of up to 600 thsd tons.
India remains the key buyer on the global lentil market, meaning further price dynamics will largely depend on its domestic crop and import policy. For Ukraine, earlier market entry could remain an important advantage in competing for buyers even amid abundant global supply.
