Ukraine’s agribusinesses turn to automation and AI amid labor shortages

Labor shortages in Ukraine’s agricultural sector are becoming one of the main drivers of faster automation, digitalization and artificial intelligence adoption. According to an Agrohub study covering 16 agricultural holdings with a combined land bank of 2.2 mln ha, the most acute shortages are among tractor operators, drivers, engineers and elevator workers. At the same time, staffing gaps in agronomy and land management are assessed as moderate.

Reducing the number of workers per hectare is increasingly becoming a necessary response to labor shortages. Modern machinery equipped with 18–24 m wide implements, GPS navigation and precision farming systems can perform workloads that previously required three or four machines and the same number of operators.

Agricultural holdings are also using AI more actively to reduce routine work. At Kernel, algorithmic models help agronomists select hybrids, determine seeding and fertilizer rates, and automatically estimate the number of kernels on corn cobs and seeds in sunflower heads. The company says the agronomist’s role is increasingly shifting from manual control toward analytics and management of technological decisions.

At Agrein, satellite monitoring, vegetation indices, soil data and variable-rate application are used to monitor large areas and quickly identify problematic fields. AI and analytical models help forecast crop development, disease risks and maturity, as well as determine which fields should be inspected or harvested first.

TAS Agro also sees labor shortages as an incentive to accelerate modernization. The company is renewing its machinery fleet, expanding precision farming and digitalizing production processes, allowing it to complete the full production cycle with fewer people. At the same time, agricultural holdings are having to improve employee skills and wages, as automation reduces headcount needs while raising qualification requirements.
