Ukraine. Buckwheat became the most profitable crop in 2020

According to Agrarian Economics Institute of Ukraine, overall profitability of agricultural production is expected at 17.4% (11.8% in 2019, 22.8% in 2018), with crop production profitability at 22.3% vs. 14.2% a year ago, UkrAgroConsult reports.
Cultivation of the following crops is expected to be highly profitable:
– buckwheat (the most profitable crop in 2020) – 63% vs. 6.6%;
– oats – 43.7% vs. 8.8%;
– rye – 41.3% vs. 9.9%;
– soybeans – 37.5% vs. 13.3%;
– wheat – 33% vs. 7.3%
– sunflower seed (the most profitable crop in 2019) – 29% vs. 23.5%.
A y-o-y margin drop is expected in growing the following crops:
– corn for grain – 12.8% vs. 17.8%;
– millet – 4.2% vs. 20.2%.
Cultivation of peas and sorghum is still unprofitable.
The profitability rise happened largely thanks to growth in prices of most crop products.
