India steps up talks on restoring safe Black Sea grain shipments
India has stepped up its diplomatic involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war and is holding talks with both sides on the security of Black Sea shipping. According to Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, New Delhi has moved in recent months from general calls for dialogue to more practical engagement.
One of the key areas under discussion is safe navigation and the restoration of stable grain shipments through the Black Sea. India is also discussing energy exports and possible arrangements for mutual restraint from strikes.
Jaishankar said India is trying to help find practical solutions that could reduce risks to trade and critical infrastructure. This is particularly important for global grain markets, as disruptions in the Black Sea continue to affect exports from the region.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha earlier said India had presented one of the most comprehensive ceasefire proposals. He also named Turkey, Egypt and the US among the countries that had submitted their own proposals.
Ukraine says it is ready to consider energy and Black Sea ceasefire arrangements provided attacks on energy and port infrastructure stop. Talks involving India are continuing, but no specific agreement on restoring shipping and grain exports has yet been announced.
