UkrAgroConsult held a training workshop for farmers in Luhansk oblast in support of 3R Project
In support of the project “Eastern Ukraine: Reconnect, Recover, Revitalize” (3R Project), UkrAgroConsult Company held a training workshop for agricultural producers in Luhansk oblast communities on the peculiarities of agribusiness planning in the light of climate change. The workshop was intended for farmers from territorial communities in Starobilsk, Bilokurakine and Troitske rayons.
“Given the increasing temperature trend in the region, it is appropriate to focus on growing more productive hybrid varieties of wheat, sunflower and corn and on irrigation. This is what can be a protective measure for farmers amid rapid climate change,” said Serhiy Kokovikhin, Deputy Director for Research at the Institute of Irrigated Agriculture of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The experts examined the region’s irrigation systems and found their condition to be semi-critical. Indeed, just 1.7 Th ha of land is now watered in the government-controlled part of Luhansk oblast, or one tenth of the total irrigation area existing in the region.
“We advise farmers, especially vegetable and berry growers, to think already now of investment in drip irrigation for raising their yields, because it is what will help them stay profitable in a changing climate,” said Olga Mozgova from UkrAgroConsult.
For farmers in Luhansk oblast, UkrAgroConsult has prepared methodological and practical recommendations for developing climate-smart agriculture.
