The UK government has decided to maintain its anti-dumping duties on biodiesel imports from Indonesia. The Secretary of State for Business and Trade accepted the recommendation of the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), which concluded that the measures remain necessary to protect the UK market.

The review was launched in December 2024 to determine whether the duties should remain in place and whether the product definition required updating. Following its investigation, the TRA recommended extending the duties for another five years.

As part of the review, the authority also recommended excluding sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from the product definition. The decision reflects differences in production processes, feedstocks, customer base, and the limited interchangeability between SAF and conventional biodiesel.

Under the updated definition, the duties will continue to apply to biodiesel in the form of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and paraffinic diesel fuels produced from non-fossil feedstocks, whether sold in pure form or as part of a blend. The duty rates will remain between 8% and 18%.

Before the UK left the European Union, trade remedy investigations were conducted by the European Commission. Following Brexit, many EU trade measures were carried over into UK law, and the TRA has been reviewing them to determine whether they remain appropriate for the UK. The biodiesel review is one of the final transition reviews to be completed.
