Sweden opens largest grain complex since 1980s
The Swedish agricultural cooperative Lantmännen has opened a new grain complex in the city of Uddevalla. The investment in the project amounted to about 500 million Swedish kronor ($54 million), and the company calls the facility the largest industrial project of its kind in Sweden since the 1980s. This is stated in the company’s statement.
The new grain complex is located next to the port of Uddevalla and will become an important logistics hub for grain transshipment. The infrastructure includes 21 silos, two grain dryers and capacity for simultaneous storage of about 44 thousand tons of grain. The annual transshipment volume can reach 100 thousand tons.
““This is an important investment for the agricultural sector in western Sweden and for Swedish grain exports. The new complex provides greater capacity, more efficient transhipment and better opportunities to respond to both crop fluctuations and demand in export markets,” said Lars-Gunnar Ed, head of the agricultural business at Lantmännen.
The complex is capable of handling vessels with a carrying capacity of up to 30,000 tons. During the harvest season, the company will be able to load grain onto vessels at a speed of up to 500 tons per hour. For this purpose, a 400-meter conveyor and a 56-meter ship loader with a throughput of 750 tons per hour were installed at the facility.
The complex also has two receiving points with a capacity of 250 tons per hour each, while the previous complex had four points with a capacity of 60 tons per hour.
The construction of the complex lasted from 2024 to 2026. The supplier of equipment for grain storage and transhipment was the Swedish company Tornum.
“By strengthening the infrastructure from farm to port, we improve conditions for the entire grain chain, expand Sweden’s export opportunities and strengthen the country’s food security,” said Lantmännen Chairman Jan-Erik Hansson.
