Sunflower seed purchase prices in Ukraine rise by $23/t in a week
Sunflower seed purchase prices in Ukraine rose sharply last week. On a CPT plant basis, prices increased from $460/t to $483/t — up $23/t, or 5%. This was the strongest price movement among major oilseeds on the Ukrainian market.
The increase in domestic prices comes amid mixed trends in the global vegetable oil market. As of September 4, palm oil was trading at around MYR 4,898/t, while CBOT soybean oil stood at 68.89 cents/lb. Meanwhile, European sunflower oil was assessed at around $1,410/t FOB North Europe, down $10/t on the day.
Ukraine’s sunflower complex exports in August were concentrated mainly on processed products. During the month, the country exported 147.1 thsd tons of sunflower oil and 110 thsd tons of sunflower meal.
At the same time, direct sunflower seed exports remained minimal at just 0.7 thsd tons. Thus, almost all exports from Ukraine’s sunflower complex consisted of sunflower oil and meal.
The increase in purchase prices to $483/t is intensifying competition for raw materials on the domestic market. At the same time, developments in the global sunflower oil market remain an important factor for further sunflower seed price dynamics in Ukraine.
