Sugar production forecast in Ukraine may be revised downwards

According to the National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine “Ukrsugar”, this year about 162 thousand hectares were sown with sugar beets. Based on these areas, the initial forecast of sugar production is about 1.2 million tons.

This was stated in an interview with AgroPortal.ua by the head of the National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine “Ukrsugar”, Yana Kavushevska.

However, she added that during April, the crops were negatively affected by several waves of frost, and in May – by dust storms. In some regions, the damage was quite significant, and the scale of losses is currently being assessed.

“We can already say that weather conditions reduce the likelihood of a repeat of last year’s record yield indicators. Therefore, we do not rule out that the production forecast will be revised downwards. As for the domestic market, after the start of the full-scale war, sugar consumption in Ukraine decreased to approximately 900 thousand tons per year. Today we are observing a further decrease – to about 800 thousand tons,” the expert noted.

At the same time, she added that even under a conservative production scenario, the Ukrainian market will be fully supplied with sugar. In addition, the export potential of the industry will be preserved
