Specialized feed drives growth of Indonesia’s omega-3 egg market
Indonesia’s market for omega-3 enriched eggs is expanding as consumer interest in functional foods and healthier diets increases. For commercial egg producers, the segment offers an opportunity to capture additional value through premium positioning.
Switching to omega-3 egg production does not require major changes to poultry operations. Producers can use the same laying hen breeds and existing housing systems, with the key difference being the use of specialized feed that increases the omega-3 fatty acid content of eggs.
However, such feed is more expensive than conventional layer rations, raising production costs. According to Asian Agribiz, omega-3 eggs are sold in some modern Indonesian retail chains for more than $0.17–0.22 per egg.
Higher feeding costs can be offset by premium retail prices. The higher nutritional value of omega-3 eggs allows producers to target consumers willing to pay more for products with added health benefits.
As demand for functional foods continues to grow, the omega-3 egg segment could become an additional source of income for Indonesian poultry producers. It may also support higher profitability in commercial egg production and further expansion of premium product ranges.
