Spain’s grain crop to fall 22%, imports to reach nearly 15 mln tons
Spain’s grain production in 2026/27 is estimated at 18.9 mln tons, down from 24.2 mln tons a season earlier, a decline of almost 22%. According to USDA FAS, the crop was affected by excessive rainfall early in the year and heat during grain filling, as well as lower planted area and more restrained fertilizer use.
Soft wheat production is forecast at 5.9 mln tons, down from 7.7 mln tons last year, while durum wheat output is expected at 537 thsd tons versus 657 thsd tons. Barley is set to record the steepest decline, falling to 6.5 mln tons from 9.2 mln tons. Corn production, most of which is irrigated, is expected to remain relatively stable at around 3.9 mln tons.
Lower domestic supply will be partly offset by ample opening stocks of wheat and barley, although inventories are expected to decline during the season. Spain’s total grain imports in 2026/27 are forecast by FAS at nearly 15 mln tons.
Demand for imported durum wheat could rise particularly sharply. Due to the substantial decline in domestic production, Spain, which has traditionally recorded a surplus in this segment, is expected to increase purchases of durum on international markets.
At the same time, corn is playing an increasingly important role in filling the gap left by other grains. Spain imported 7.3 mln tons of corn in 2025/26, while shipments from the US are running well above last year’s pace. The feed sector remains the main driver of grain demand in the country.
