Safrinha Corn 29% Planted in Parana, 57% in Mato Grosso

Farmers in Parana in southern Brazil have harvested 26% of their first corn crop according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). The corn is 31% filling grain, 68% maturing and the corn is rated 23% poor, 37% average, and 40% good. The first corn crop acreage in Parana is estimated at 437,545 hectares (1.08 million acres), which represents approximately 15% of the state’s total corn acreage.

The worst first corn crop is found in western Parana where the corn is rated 50-100% poor. In some of the areas hit hardest by the hot and dry conditions, some of the corn was not even harvested.

The other 85% of the corn in Parana is planted as the safrinha corn after the soybeans are harvested. Deral estimates that farmers have planted 29% of their safrinha corn and the crop is rated 16% average and 84% good. Deral expects farmers in Parana to plant 2.5 million hectares of safrinha corn (6.1 million acres).

Mato Grosso is Brazil’s largest safrinha corn producing state and as of late last week, farmers had planted 57% of their safrinha corn compared to 21% last year and 46% average. This represents an advance of 15 points for the week.

Nationwide, Brazilian farmers had planted 42% of their 2021/22 safrinha corn as of late last week according to AgRural. This compares to last year when 11% of the safrinha corn had been planted.

The safrinha crop represents approximately 75% of Brazil’s total corn production.
