Romania builds 250 thsd tons per year SAF/HVO plant
OMV Petrom is building a new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO) plant at the Petrobrazi refinery in Romania, with annual capacity of 250 thsd tons. Investment in the project totals €560 mln, with production scheduled to start in 2028.
The plant will use vegetable fats and used cooking oils as feedstocks, processed with green hydrogen. The facility will be able to flexibly adjust its production mix depending on demand and feedstock availability.
In addition to SAF and HVO, the plant will also be able to produce bio-naphtha and bio-LPG. According to OMV Petrom, the fuels can reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 65% compared with conventional fossil fuels.
Construction has already entered an active phase, with foundations completed and major columns and reactors installed. The company has also secured contracts covering more than 80% of the feedstock required for the plant’s first eight years of operation.
At the same time, two green hydrogen units with a combined capacity of 55 MW are being developed at Petrobrazi. OMV Petrom’s total investment in the SAF/HVO programme, including hydrogen capacity, is around €750 mln.
