Real scale of Ukraine’s agricultural sector Is often overestimated in Europe
Taras Vysotskyi, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture, believes that the actual scale of Ukraine’s agricultural sector is often overstated in European discussions. He made the remarks during a forum held at the European Parliament on June 23.
Vysotskyi noted that Ukraine has approximately 24.5 million hectares of agricultural land, while figures of 40 million hectares are frequently cited in public discussions.
For his part, Member of the European Parliament Paulo do Nascimento Cabral stressed that Ukraine’s integration into the European Union should be carried out pragmatically, with proper preparation, transitional mechanisms, and a clear understanding of its impact on the Common Agricultural Policy.
“At the same time, Ukraine can become a strategic partner for the EU in strengthening food security,” he said.
Participants of the forum also discussed practical aspects of integration, including access to financing for producers, land restoration, infrastructure protection, environmental standards, sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, the development of processing industries and logistics, as well as Ukraine’s integration into European value chains.
