Rains improve winter crop conditions in Ukraine, but drought persists in some regions
Agrometeorological conditions in Ukraine during the second ten days of October 2026 were generally favorable for winter crop emergence and early development. Significant rainfall replenished productive soil moisture reserves across nearly all soil layers, supporting uniform crop emergence in many fields, according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
According to agrometeorologists, rainfall significantly improved soil moisture conditions following insufficient precipitation in September. However, moisture distribution remained uneven. In some areas of western, northern, and central Ukraine, heavy rains caused excessive moisture in the topsoil.
Meanwhile, drought conditions persisted in parts of Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, as well as some areas of Vinnytsia and Lviv regions. Experts noted that uneven rainfall distribution led to significant differences even within individual regions, with some areas experiencing waterlogged soils while others continued to face drought. This created varying conditions for seed germination and winter crop development.
A positive factor for winter crops was the rapid accumulation of effective temperatures above +5°C. The combination of adequate soil moisture and favorable temperatures supported crop emergence and early vegetation. According to weather station observations, by the end of the second ten days of October, winter grains were mainly at the seed germination and emergence stages.
At the same time, some early-sown winter crops showed delayed development due to moisture shortages in September. Crop development was also behind average seasonal levels in fields where sowing had been delayed.
