Philippine corn production may fall 14% due to typhoons
Corn production in the Philippines could fall by 14.4% in 2026 to 2.08 mln tons from 2.43 mln tons previously. The latest forecast from the Philippine Statistics Authority is also 1.5% below its July estimate of 2.11 mln tons.
The lower outlook reflects both a reduction in harvested area and weaker yields. The corn harvest area is estimated at 688.03 thsd ha, down 12.8% from the previous figure of 789.24 thsd ha.
Average yield is expected to decline by 1.6% to 3.02 t/ha from 3.07 t/ha previously.
Corn has so far been harvested from around 129.95 thsd ha, or 18.9% of the projected area, producing 366.79 thsd tons of grain.
The weaker production outlook is linked to a series of typhoons over the past two months, which intensified the southwest monsoon and caused significant damage to agriculture. Total losses to the agricultural sector are estimated at $69.23 mln.
