Peanut butter consumption in the US reaches multi-year high
The United States is experiencing a structural shift in legume consumption. According to a report by the National Agricultural Statistics Service of the USDA, peanut butter has become the key driver of the sector. It now accounts for more than 60% of total food use of peanuts in the country, due to its role as an affordable source of plant-based protein.
According to the USDA Economic Research Service as of September 2025, the peanut butter segment grew by 6% compared to the 10-year average.
At the same time, other categories are showing the opposite trend. In the 2024/25 marketing year, consumption of traditional peanut snacks (whole nuts, bars, and snack mixes) fell below long-term averages. Thus, overall peanut consumption in the US is largely supported by processing.
The growth in domestic demand is supported by an expanding raw material base. The US agricultural sector continues to show steady upward dynamics. In the 2024/25 season, peanut production reached a record 6.5 billion pounds (2.95 million tons), up 25% compared to a decade ago (2014/15 season).
The increase in domestic supply has allowed US producers not only to meet local demand but also to strengthen their position in export markets. Since 2014/15, peanut exports have grown by 10%, while industrial processing volumes have increased by 6%.
