ORLEN launches HVO plant in Poland with a production capacity of 300 thsd tons of biofuel per year
ORLEN has launched a hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) production plant in Płock, Poland, marking a new step in the company’s expansion of advanced biofuels capacity.
The project required an investment of around PLN 800 million (approximately USD 218 million). The facility is capable of producing about 300,000 tonnes of HVO per year from rapeseed oil, used cooking oil (UCO), or a mixture of both feedstocks.
With the start of operations at the new plant, ORLEN’s total biofuel production capacity has increased to around 700,000 tonnes per year. The company plans to further expand this level to approximately 1.1 million tonnes by 2030 as part of its long-term energy transition strategy.
According to ORLEN, the new installation strengthens its control over a key segment of the biofuels market, improves cost efficiency, and reduces exposure to volatility in external raw material and fuel markets.
The company is also developing initiatives to secure feedstock supply, including its “Catch crops for biofuels” programme, which aims to integrate farmers and technology partners into the production chain of advanced and second-generation biofuels.
