Organic retail sales in Ukraine increase by 7.4%
Ukraine’s organic food market is showing positive momentum, with retail sales growing by 7.4%. Meanwhile, demand for organic products is increasing even faster in European markets, creating additional opportunities for Ukrainian producers and exporters. This was stated by Johanna Stumpner, Head of Regulatory Policy and International Trade at Germany’s Association of Organic Food Producers, during the Organic Day in Ukraine conference.
The strongest growth in organic retail sales since 2024 has been recorded in Norway, Luxembourg and Hungary, at 21.3%, 20.2% and 13.9%, respectively. Rising consumer demand highlights the continued expansion of Europe’s organic food market, while also increasing the need for additional production and supplies.
According to Stumpner, around 11% of agricultural land in the EU is used for organic production. However, the expansion of organic farmland remains gradual and significantly slower than market growth. The EU organic sector currently includes approximately 438 thsd producers and farmers, as well as 109 thsd processors.
The gap between demand growth and production expansion could lead to shortages of organic products in the European market. At the same time, Stumpner noted that the sector lacks sufficient political support, which is limiting its development. As a result, European companies may need to increase purchases of organic raw materials and finished products from suppliers outside the EU.
For Ukraine, this situation creates additional export opportunities, as the country is already among the EU’s ten leading suppliers of imported organic products. Further growth in European demand could encourage Ukrainian farmers to expand organic production and strengthen their positions in international markets.
